About
A CFO's read should exist on day one
Good startups run out of money they did not see coming. Vael was started to give every founder a plain-language read of their cash, their leaks, and their next move, without needing a CFO on payroll.
Watching good founders fly blind
Daniel Reyes spent years running finance and operations at two venture-backed startups. In both of them, he watched talented founders make high-stakes calls on cash without a clear picture of what they actually had. Runway was a spreadsheet nobody updated. Leaks went unnoticed for months. The decisions that mattered most, whether to hire, when to push the fundraise, what to cut, came down to guesswork.
Mara Whitfield had spent the same years building machine learning systems that turn real-world, messy data into decisions. She knew that reading a founder's ledger, vendor name by vendor name, month by month, is a language problem. A rules engine breaks the moment a vendor renames itself or a charge lands in the wrong month. A language model reads intent.
Together, they started Vael to answer one question: what if every founder had the read a good CFO gives, from day one?
Our mission
Vael's mission is to give every founder an honest, plain-language read of their money whenever they need it. Not a dashboard full of charts. Not financial advice. A copilot: the read and the reasons, so the founder can make the call.
Built AI-native. A language model is the engine at the center of everything Vael does. Reading a real ledger, with its odd vendor names, duplicated tools, and one-off charges misread as recurring burn, is a language problem. We built around the model from day one, not around a rule set that breaks when the data gets hard.
Founders and the early crew
Daniel Reyes
CofounderCofounder and CEO
Ran finance and operations at two venture-backed startups and watched good founders fly blind on cash. Started Vael to give every founder the read a CFO gives, on day one.
Mara Whitfield
CofounderCofounder and CTO
Built machine learning systems that turn messy, real-world data into decisions. Leads the model-agnostic engine that reads a founder's numbers and grounds every figure.
Theo Alvarez
Founding Engineer
Full-stack engineer who cares about the boring parts of fintech: correctness, reconciliation, and never showing a number you cannot trust.
Naomi Cho
Head of Design
Designs calm, exact interfaces for people making high-stakes calls. Believes a runway number should read like a sentence, not a spreadsheet.
Sofia Marren
Head of Finance Partnerships
Former fractional CFO to a dozen seed startups. Makes sure Vael's reads match how real operators think about their money.
Four things we do not compromise on
Plain language, always
If a founder cannot act on it in one read, it is not done. We turn numbers into sentences, not dashboards.
Grounded, not glib
Every figure ties back to the data. The model reasons, the math is checked in code, and we show our work.
A copilot, not the pilot
We give the read and the reasons. The founder makes the call. We never pretend to be a licensed advisor.
Earn the money's trust
Read-only, encrypted, never sold. The fastest way to lose a founder is to be careless with their books.
